Want more "Liberty On The Rocks" socials in SF?

Starchild,

I have the perhaps mistaken impression LOTR views loud music as an integral
feature of their events.

Your thoughts?

Warm regards, Michael

Hi Michael,

Interesting point. I haven't really thought about it, but would tend to agree that if music is loud enough to make conversation difficult, it could be detrimental to the event's purpose.

I'm copying LOTR organizer Thomas Randle on this message so he can be made aware of your concern and respond to it. My guess however is that loud music has not been deliberately sought out by Thomas or previous LOTR organizers, and that some (all?) of the bars where these events have been held were chosen for other considerations, and simply happened to be playing music at relatively high volumes.

Hey all,

We definitely try to avoid meetups where there is loud music. Its a
balancing act as I have been told everybody hates meeting up for drinks
during the week, yet Fridays and Saturdays are the loudest, busiest days at
any bar whether there is music or not. This is definitely detrimental to
Liberty on the Rocks meetups in San Francisco and Berkeley, especially
considering our future plans to incorporate short events to the socials like
mock debates, speakers, and liberty trivia like the other chapters in the
nation (once we get our fundraising going.)

Before I took on coordinating the Nor-Cal Chapters, we used to meet at
Becketts in Berkeley Fridays and it was fine until a few hours in when they
had a band downstairs which we despised. Currently we meet at Pyramid
Brewery in Walnut Creek on Wednesdays, and as far as noise, it has been
awesome. In our search for good North Bay, Berkeley, Solano, and South Bay
venues we have been looking for equally quiet venues at equally quiet days
of the week.

We don't have an organizer for San Francisco meetups yet. While I coordinate
the Bay Area, I do the organizing exclusively for the Mt. Diablo Chapter. I
have hosted past SF meetups to gin up interest (lots of attendance interest,
no visable organizer interest). I have been simply picking venues LOTR has
been to before and setting up meetups without scoping out the place since I
don't have a lot of spare time, and I have chosen downtown SF due to my
familiarity with it, and lack of familiarity elsewhere.

I have gotten a few emails questioning these choices which is fine, and I
would prefer to have them somewhere people like. To do this we need one or
two people who lives in San Francisco and can be open minded to hosting
meetups for all right of center people (conservative, libertarian, an-cap,
etc) to do so. It is not a huge time commitment other than finding a place
and planning the event time, day and activities (optional.) I am looking
forward to incorporating future SF events as a part of the Bay Area Liberty
on the Rocks mission!

Regards,

Thomas Randle

Starchild,

I agree with your assessment.

I hope in the future LOTR will choose places where shouting would not be necessary for speaking with someone three feet away.

If no bars qualify, then innumerable restaurants would. I would be happy to suggest some in SF if Thomas requests it.

Warm regards, Michael
