VM & LPSF Membership Project

Mike, if you send me the info on fixing the Voicemail, I'll do it ASAP.

Michael, I agree that the LP needs to be a friendly place for former Ron
Paul supporters. And we should definitely have a strategy for tapping
into that community. For instance, I've been running Google AdWords for
Outright Libertarians for the past couple of months based on the
keywords "Ron Paul gay" "Ron Paul marriage" "Ron Paul adoption" etc.
(and also the same keywords for Kubby, Smith, and Phillies, as well as
simply "gay Libertarian"). My budget for these AdWords is low, so we've
only had a few thousand impressions thus far, but at least I know that
people who are looking for Ron Paul's views on gay rights are more
likely to be gay-friendly than non-gay-friendly, and they're getting to
see an ad that simply says "Outright Libertarians: We're lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender Libertarian Party activists". Nothing pro or
anti Ron Paul in the message, but it at least gets our organization in
their consciousness.

Unfortunately, it's harder to focus AdWords to just those people living
in the 50 sq miles that is San Francisco, so this may not translate as
well to LPSF's purposes. But I guess I was just pointing out that,
while I strongly disagree with your claim that Ron Paul is a
Libertarian, I at least recognize that very many people do in fact agree
with you, and I'm doing everything I can do to get these people into the LP.

Also, since the next meeting will be after February 5, "Super Tuesday,"
after which Ron Paul is expected to drop out of the race, based on
comments by senior people in his campaign, I actually recommend that we
discuss such strategies for rounding up former Paul supporters by email
long before the next meeting. But we can go ahead and add it to the
agenda for that meeting, as well.

So, let's start now. Any of my fellow techno-geeks aware of a good way
to not waste LPSF money on converting non-SF people using ads on the
web? Also, what other ideas do people have? Have the Paul supporters
who have been going to the Paul meetups and such been taking LP
materials with you to distribute? If not, would you be willing to? We
can work on getting those to you ASAP. Maybe this is finally the way to
get rid of some posters -- selling (or maybe even giving, so nobody
there can complain?) them to people attending Paul meetups? Are there
other ideas?

Thanks for bringing this up, Michael.

Hi Rob and Michael,

You asked for suggestions, so here are mine. It would seem to me that
the objectives are 1) bring back to the LP all those who registered
Republican to support Ron Paul (trust me, they are not automatically
coming back); and 2) bring to the LP Democrats, Republicans, and
others who saw the light in supporting Ron Paul, and might want to
continue promoting the Ron Paul message.

We might try obtaining a current disk of Republican voters, and send a
letter to those who recently registered, especially those whose name
we will recognize as former LP'ers. Getting a disk for a party other
than yours is like pulling teeth, though.

We might try a "Real Libertarian" Meetup Group, and somehow cull all
the "homeless" Ron Paul Meetup Group members. Surely these folks must
be aware that the Republican Party is not where Ron Paul's ideas are at!

This is going to be an interesting year!!!

Marcy

Thanks, Rob.

I second your suggestion of adding it to the Feb. agenda.

Best, Michael

Rob,

First you said he was dropping out last October and
supporting Romney (??) then you say he is dropping out
after Feb. 5th.... where do you get your information?

He just beat Thompson AND Giuliani (AGAIN!!) and will
do well in Nevada and California, if anything, Ron
Paul may not win the nomination but he will seek an
independent run or the Constitution Party or LP
candidacy, either of which will pull supporters from
the CP or LP, and he will be going until November.

I suggest we just stay friendly to the Paul supporters
no matter what happens, as his views are beating the
views of Thompson and Giuliani, and his views are more
in line with "ours" then "theirs". Instead of setting
timetables reach out to them NOW, see if they want to
come around NOW, don't worry bout who they will vote
for for President, worry about how many city council
candidates or state rep candidates they can/will work
for going door to door and making phone calls etc....
why do we keep treating RP supporters as if they have
the plague? Treat them as any R or D who decides to
vote for the Lib once in awhile. I know myself, I have
voted for many R's and D's before (and a few times
when the LP had a candidate) cause I don't ALWAYS vote
party line....

That's my take

Dear Marcy,

There are various Ron Paul Meet-up people who get these lists routinely. Come to an SF Ron Paul Meet-up event. I'm sure they'll explain the process. (You probably already know Steph Burns, JJ, and others.)

Your idea of a libertarian meet-up sounds worth exploring.

Best, Michael

The Libertarian Meetup is not theoretical. It's been a reality for a
few months now. Rachel Steinberg, a recent transplant from Washington
DC, has been organizing them ever since she moved here in November.

Here's the URL for those who are interested in participating:

All the work has been done. All you guys need to do is start showing
up.

Hi Rob,

Yes, I knew about Rachel's Meetup; I believe you and Chris announced
it a few months ago. However, I was speaking about a specific-purpose
Libertarian Meetup group, one specifically designed to bring back
libertarians lost to Republicans recently. But, we can throw that
idea among others which maybe we might want to discuss at the next
LPSF meeting.
