Trump and 1984
I have read that because of the election of Donald Trump, the book 1984 by
George Orwell has sold out at the bookstores.
This has led me to consider reprinting 1984 in a large print edition with
18 point type to make it easier for us old people to read.
The connection between Donald Trump and the book 1984 is not obvious unless
one has read the last part of the book.
In 1984, the protagonist Winston Smith works for the “Ministry of Love”.
His job is to insure that the general population love the government and
its leader Big Brother.
To insure that the people love Big Brother, Winston rewrites all the
newspaper articles so that they correctly reflect the views of the current
government.
After having re-written an old newspaper article, he replaces it with the
new article and then flushes the original article down the “memory hole”.
He does this so thoroughly that in the future nobody will be able to find
out what the real past was.
The connection with Trump should now be obvious. Trump talks constantly on
TV today about “Fake News” and “Alternate Facts”.
Many people obviously believe Trump's version of the news because that is
how he got elected.
So, I am holding a contest as to who can write the best essay explaining
and expounding on this idea of how the Presidency of Trump is an outgrowth
on the government as described in the book 1984 by George Orwell.

This is the perfect time for this book to re-appear with Trump claiming
seven times in a press conference two days ago that The New York Times, The
Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and CNN News are all publishing
"fake news".

The advantages of having an enemy are well-known. In Orwell's dystopian
novel "1984" -- suddenly a new best-seller in the Trump era -- the masses
engage in a daily mandatory ritual, the "Two Minutes of Hate," during which
their anger is feverishly stoked against the foe of the moment. Dictators,
strongmen and autocrats have practiced the art of drumming up loathing
toward others to great effect.
Yep. Exactly like 1984. The Minister of Truth has never been busier spinning the concept of hate. Break windows, shut down speakers, pepper spray someone's face and The Minister will announce you are spreading Love and fighting Hate. The scenario would be laughable if it were not so tragic. But hey, if all this helps sell news, gives progressives a chance to pass more laws and spend more money (hope you all heard about SF's proposal for a city income tax), and allows The Establishment to run our lives for a little longer, who am I to say anything.
