When I learned about Nazi Germany in high school, I wondered how could the citizens allow this to happen? Well, now we know. This is how it happens, people. It is happening right under our noses, step-by-step, one step at a time, each step encroaching a little more than the last until before we know it we will be nothing more than cowering serfs and subjects.

Interestingly, some of us were discussing at the last "Free Exchange" (first Saturday of every month; check www.lpsf.org Bay Area Events) how did Nazi Germany first rise to power. The conclusion was that it rose as tyranny often rises -- with the full consent of the people. The people gave National Socialism their full support in an attempt to return Germany to its former glory, only to find years later that they slept while tyranny rose. Same happening here. We want free stuff and easy money, and vote accordingly. People like Ron Paul cry in the wilderness and are donned tin foil hats. Well, every nation has the government it deserves.
Exactly, Marcy. That is how it happened then and that is how it is happening now.
However, I quibble with "full support". Hitler only got 30-something percent of the popular vote but the rest was split among so many candidates that he won. So the majority of the people were against him or, at least, he was not their first choice. But that majority did nothing as the tyranny grew. Same thing here.
"Freedom had been hunted round the globe; reason was considered as rebellion; and the slavery of fear had made men afraid to think. But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing."
--Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, 1791
The lines in the contest are drawn in such a way that there is always the same winner.
This is what the social formation does. The choices are only which master will be your master.
