Leaping Lizards! One would need a lot more brain matter than I have to follow your train of thought!! Yes, everybody on this list knows, or should know, that I am a "conservative libertarian."
However, if someone says to me "Free Assange!!", regardless of the law under which he is being wanted for questioning or charges, that to me is the "rule of man."
The "rule of law" would mean he shows up for the hearing, responds to the charges, and fights like heck to prove his innocence within the legal avenues afforded in law.
I totally agree with you that in certain instances, it is not possible to fight within the confines of the legal system, and some form of extra judicial escape would be necessary. Maybe what we are disagreeing upon is whether this particular instance presents such an example.
Regarding Thoreau, I have a problem with someone living rent free out of the largess of a protector.
