The new face of "progressive" Green Party values - ban head shops?

Today's Examiner contains a story (http://www.sfexaminer.com/local/Haight_head_shops_may_burn_out.html#comments, or p. 5 in the print edition) about efforts to restrict shops selling pipes, bongs and other smoking paraphernalia in the Haight-Ashbury. Reporter Joshua Sabatini writes:

"Last week, the Board of Supervisors adopted a law requiring any new head shop to undergo a special permitting process before opening up for business. On Tuesday, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi
took the restriction even further by introducing legislation that would ban additional head shops along Lower and Upper Haight Street, still rich with 1960s nostalgia and a destination for tourists.
Mirkarimi said there are 'way too many' head shops."

Hopefully this is not the kind of trend he had in mind when he said (in a campaign profile on page 3 of today's City Star, http://www.thecitystarsf.com/catalog/catalog.php?catalog_id=368&start_page=3), "I'd like to think my legacy is still evolving."
