Presenter: Jeffrey Rogers Hummel Ph.D.
Many commentators keep referring to the current financial crisis as the worst since the Great Depression but none of the economic indicators bear that out. Indeed, people are making a fuss about a recession that hasn't even happened yet, and may not happen at all. Professor Hummel will offer his analysis of what really is behind the recent market turmoil and explain why he believes it is a lot less serious than popularly portrayed.
Jeffrey Rogers Hummel is Associate Professor in the Department of Economics, San Jose State University, where he teaches both economics and history. His specializations are macroeconomics, money and banking, monetary theory and economic history. A former National Fellow at the Hoover Institution, he is the author of Emancipating Slaves, Enslaving Free Men: A History of the American Civil War. He also wrote the scripts for audio tapes produced by Knowledge Products on the Constitution (narrated by Walter Cronkite) and on American Wars (narrated by George C. Scott). His articles and reviews have appeared in the Journal of Economic History, Investors' Business Daily, the Independent Review, the Texas Law Review, the International Philosophical Quarterly, and numerous other publications. After receiving his B.A. in history from Grove City College, Dr. Hummel went on to become a tank platoon leader in the U.S. Army in the 1970s. He later received a Ph.D. in History with a minor in economics from the University of Texas at Austin. Milton Friedman was on his dissertation committee.
