STATEMENT ON THE HANDOVER OF POWER IN IRAQ

Below is a statement by James P. Gray, who is the Libertarian party
nominee for US Senate in California:

"The handover of limited sovereignty to an Iraqi government today
partially fulfills an important promise made last November by the
President. While true sovereignty won't occur until all US and
coalition forces leave Iraq, this is nevertheless an important and
hopeful step for Iraqis.

"Months ago, I urged the internationalization of our mission in Iraq,
leading to a rotation out of the country by December 25th of all
American forces. Regretably, the manner in which the President
pursued war and occupation have made it impossible to convince other
nations to share the military burden in Iraq.

"Let us each hope that this new government in Bagdhad will be able to
provide to the Iraqi people precisely what the United States was
unable to give, namely peace, security and stability. And let us
further ask for the safe deliverance of our forces home quickly from
this warn-torn land."
