State Assembly race

Michael,

I know what you're saying about politicians. I think Tony Hall played
us like that a few years ago. But I don't really consider Barry
Hermanson a politician. He's a pretty straightforward activist type,
albeit from a different ideological perspective. I'm not saying he's
anywhere close to being a libertarian, but I think we can safely pursue
mutual goals with non-libertarians where our interests overlap as long
as we stick to libertarian principles.

Starchild,

I agree with Derek. Politicians are not to be trusted. They'll tell
you what you want to hear (if they're with the program). And they're
very intuitive at determining what this would be.

After speaking with one, it's easy to conclude: "Hey, this guy's kind
of libertarian--we can work with him!" Don't get sucked in.
Politicians lie, lie, lie. The really talented ones, e.g., Clinton and
Bush, actually believe their own lies, making them particularly adept
at it.

Best, Michael

Starchild:
Do you really think these far-left types (the Greens and other
so-called
"progressives") can be trusted? I happen to think they can't. This
would
argue in favor of not cooperating with them in any way.

Richard,

You make a good point. Fiona Ma has always seemed pretty cool. Then
again, she is an establishment politician. Maybe I'll try to call
and
get a feel for where she stands on the issue. I see a few likely
outcomes of such an effort:

(1) She doesn't give an answer before July 31, after being given a
reasonable opportunity to respond
(2) She makes vaguely supportive comments in favor of open debates
without saying anything specific
(3) She disagrees that alternative candidates should automatically
be
invited to all debates
(4) She says she favors alternative candidates being invited to
every
debate but doesn't promise to skip debates which exclude them
(5) She not only agrees with open debates but promises to skip
debates
that aren't open

For each of the above possible outcomes, how do you think we ought
to
proceed? Barry? Anyone else?

It seems to me that Fiona Ma is the type of person who
would willing let Libertarians and Greens be in any
general election debates with her anyway. It would be
silly to stand in front of her residence handing out
flyers before we ascertain what her attitude is.
Since San Francisco is so overwhelmingly Democratic, I
would expect any Democratic nominee who seems as nice
as she seems to be (to me, anyway) would be happy to
have a 4-candidate general election debate. Doing
that just plays well in a place like San Francisco.
Of course if it was someone with Carole Migden's
personality, that would be a different matter.

Barry,

I don't know who will be running on the Libertarian
ticket, but I have
every expectation that we will field a candidate.
According to a recent
email she sent out (see below), Fiona Ma is having a
party for
supporters at her house on July 31. I think this
presents a good
opportunity for Libertarian-Green cooperation. My
idea is that we would
jointly come up with some "Play Fair!" signs and
fliers urging the
Democrat and Republican candidates to commit to
including Libs, Greens
& other alternative party candidates in any debates
and to refuse to
participate in debates that exclude qualified
candidates, and stand
outside Fiona's house handing them out as people
arrive. Interested?

Just so you know, Leland Yee is running for the

State Senate because

Jackie Speier is termed out and is running for a

statewide office.

Fiona Ma and Janet Reilly are the Democratic

candidates. In case you

are not familiar with Janet, she is the wife of

Clint Reilly, a very

wealthy businessman and former candidate for

mayor. There are some

progressives in town who are lining up behind

Janet because they don't

like Fiona. Clint has helped a number of

"important" people get

elected and he will no doubt call in a few markers

(the kickoff for

Janet featured John Kerry). The Democratic

primary election next June

promises to be a bloody affair - with millions of

dollars spent to

win. As to what issues will be discussed, I doubt

there will be much

of substance. I will, of course, be running

representing the Green

Party.

Barry
