State Assembly race (Barry Hermanson's reply)

Marcy,

Sure, no problem. But this isn't just Barry's campaign, and my
suggestion was not aimed at helping him. What Chris said on that score
is correct. I wrote based on the assumption that we'll have a candidate
in the race, and that we have an interest in that candidate (and
alternative candidates in general) being able to get into any debates.

You speak of a "Libertarian proclivity to demonstrate" or get
arrested. I wish I could say I'd noticed more of this proclivity.
People who demonstrate and get arrested are showing a willingness to
courageously stand for their beliefs, helping to uphold the First
Amendment by using it, and bringing publicity to their causes. I'll
post separately an article I recently sent to California Freedom (the
LPC's monthly newspaper).

Yours in liberty,

Starchild,

Thank you for posting Barry's reply. This is his campaign, and he
seems to have decided to compete on the playing field, whether the
field is level or not. It has always been my opinion that the
Libertarian proclivity to demonstrate (let alone get arrested, etc)
is counter productive, and contributes to our remaining on the
outside looking in. I would suggest that if we wish to help Barry,
we offer him our support by distributing his flyers or attending his
candidates' meetings for example.

Marcy

I don't think that is a good idea at this time. I plan on

running a

strong enough campaign that it will be difficult for her to

ignore. I

plan to compete for many of the endorsements that she will want -

and

should get more than a few.

To go out and demonstrate outside her house at this point is
anticipating an outcome that may not happen. If I am included in

a

debate, I will most certainly demand that other candidates be

included

as well. It is almost a year until the winner of the Democratic
primary will have to begin to think about debating other

candidates -

lets work together to make sure that all debates will include all
candidates. One additional point - we may be in a position where

a

Democratic candidate doesn't want to debate at all. Republicans

are

not strong anywhere in San Francisco.

If you want to talk more about this, please give me a call. My

cell

phone number is 415-255-9494.

Barry,

I don't know who will be running on the Libertarian ticket, but I

have

every expectation that we will field a candidate. According to a
recent email she sent out (see below), Fiona Ma is having a party

for

supporters at her house on July 31. I think this presents a good
opportunity for Libertarian-Green cooperation. My idea is that we
would jointly come up with some "Play Fair!" signs and fliers

urging

the Democrat and Republican candidates to commit to including

Libs,

Greens & other alternative party candidates in any debates and to
refuse to participate in debates that exclude qualified

candidates,

and stand outside Fiona's house handing them out as people

arrive.

Interested?

Just so you know, Leland Yee is running for the State Senate

because

Jackie Speier is termed out and is running for a statewide

office.

Fiona Ma and Janet Reilly are the Democratic candidates. In case

you

are not familiar with Janet, she is the wife of Clint Reilly, a

very

wealthy businessman and former candidate for mayor. There are

some

progressives in town who are lining up behind Janet because they

don't

like Fiona. Clint has helped a number of "important" people get
elected and he will no doubt call in a few markers (the kickoff

for

Janet featured John Kerry). The Democratic primary election next

June

promises to be a bloody affair - with millions of dollars spent

to

win. As to what issues will be discussed, I doubt there will be

much

of substance. I will, of course, be running representing the

Green

Party.
