Special Screening of Tommy Chong Documentary in Oakland April 27, 2006

The Libertarian Party of Alameda County will sponsor a special
screening of the award winning documentary feature film *A/K/A Tommy
Chong* on April 27, 2006 at the Grand Lake Theater, 3200 Grand Avenue
in Oakland, California. Screenings will be at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30
p.m. so you will have two opportunities to see this unique motion
picture.

In 2003, the stoner comedy icon Tommy Chong (of "Cheech and Chong"
fame) was arrested and charged with manufacturing hand-made glass
pipes (A/K/A "Bongs") under an obscure provision of the USA PATRIOT
Act. That's right. Bongs! Josh Gilbert's hilarious, yet tragic
documentary follows this legal case over the course of two years,
exposing the absurdity of U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft's
revived War on Drug Paraphernalia that somehow made a connection
between smoking dope and supporting Al Qaeda. Under "Operation Pipe
Dreams," a total of 55 individuals were indicted on federal charges.
Chong was the big celebrity caught in the sting and the only victim
sent to prison, even though the business was founded and managed by
his oldest son, Paris. Tommy was just a figurehead who allowed his
name and likeness to be used to promote the business. In the end, it
seems that Tommy Chong was sentenced to serve nine months in federal
prison not for smoking dope or manufacturing pipes, but for making
comedy films in the 1980s about just such activities.

Winner of the Jury Prize for Best Documentary Feature at the Aspen
Film Festival, *AKA Tommy Chong* exposes the hypocrisy of the Bush
Administration's right wing assault on civil liberties and freedom of
speech. Filmmaker Josh Gilbert plans to be present at the screening
to speak to the audience and answer questions about Chong's case and
the production of the film. See http://www.akatommychong.com for
more details.

Don't miss this important East Bay Event. The Libertarian Party is
on the front lines of social and political action to bring an end to
the War on Drugs, and this motion picture is a powerful tool to help
our cause. Please join us in this effort to restore the freedoms
we've lost and to defend those few we still have left.

Dear All;

The PATRIOT ACT was also used to stop food stamp rings - prostitution rings - porn rings - all highly suspected terrorist fund raising operations - of course.

What Ashcroft missed prosecuting were wedding rings and church bell rings....something to do with Ashcroft being religious.......and turning the other eye...

Dear Steve;

  Are you referring to:?

It is better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit - Oscar Wilde

If this is what you are referring to I represent the Fool part rather than the foolish part and therefore take Umbrage. And if her husband ever finds out I'm dog meat.

Or as Wilde also said: Always forgive your enemies, nothing annoys them so much.

Of course, Ashcroft missed some other terrorist fund raising rings as well :~)

The notorious Porcelain Bath Tub Ring - The Ringleader - Bubbles - left soap scum behind

The DeBeers Diamond Ring - they were said to have a certain sparkle about them

The Ear Ring Gang - Led by Chandelier and Beaded and their sidekick - Bling Bling

The Planetary Ring - Originally formed by the gang known as: Galaxy and the Big Bang.

I am ashamed to admit I was thinking of a Monty Python sketch where he utters his famous "There is only one thing worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about". One of his listeners praises his wit, saying "I wish I had said that," to which the Python in question says "you will *X*, you will." Later Python says "there is only one thing worse than being witty, and that is not being witty." Titters.

Later in the sketch, after overhearing someone say they played handball with someone, Python/Wilde says "there is only one thing worse than playing handball with someone, and that is playing it by yourself." Deafening silence. "I wish I hadn't said that."

Funny, that's exactly what came to mind for me too. But I think Oscar Wilde would not be rolling over as violently in his grave as some historical figures might at having their quotes confused with Monty Python utterances. I'll bet he would have appreciated their sense of humor in that sketch.
