Somebody looks worried!

Mike,

I think I may have been unclear.

The idea is not to keep us pure, but rather to avoid losing influential leaders, co-opted by the perverse incentives of monopoly power (as TJ was, once elected).

Best, Michael

Michael,

Your advice would sound deliberately absurd, except I know you well enough to know that you're not joking. But wouldn't the logical consequence of what you're saying be that the Libertarian Party should discourage influential libertarian leaders from running for office, and instead seek candidates with little influence and/or few leadership qualities? Is that really what you want? What would we theoretically tell our candidates -- we're nominating you because you're a nobody and therefore morally expendable?

Yours in liberty,

Right. Elect only people who are scoundrels to begin with, and keep the rest of us pure and enslaved.

I agree with Barbara Boxer on this.

It would be a shame to see Sheehan's message perverted if she won (and was corrupted by power), which, being human, she almost certainly would be.

Even Thomas Jefferson was a libertarian before being elected, then expanded Govt dramatically after being elected.

Yeah, for real! Feinstein is one of the most authoritarian members of the U.S. Senate. Even if Sheehan was a far leftist down the line, it would be hard for her to be any worse, and as a non-politician, she could prove significantly better. Of course she probably doesn't have much of a chance even if she runs, but she could weaken Feinstein. I even recall hearing someone say Sheehan was libertarian-leaning; I haven't seen any evidence of this, but then again I haven't really been following her very closely.

I will go on record as hoping Sheehan defeats Feinstein in the Democratic primary.

20) Boxer urges Sheehan to not challenge Feinstein
Boston Globe

"California Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer today urged anti-war
activist Cindy Sheehan not to challenge the state's senior senator,
Dianne Feinstein, in the June Democratic primary. Sheehan, whose son
was killed in Iraq, has been actively considering a campaign after
criticizing Feinstein for refusing to call for an immediate withdrawal
of U.S. troops from Iraq. But Boxer, a liberal former Marin County
supervisor who strongly opposed the war in Iraq, said Sheehan might
actually hurt her anti-war cause by jumping into the race against her
fellow Democrat who is entering her 14th year in the Senate. 'I don't
think having her in the Senate election helps her at all,' Boxer told
a roundtable of California reporters this morning. 'I think it might
have the opposite effect. Maybe she's more valuable out there not as a
candidate,' Boxer said of Sheehan and her anti-war effort." (02/07/06)
