SFUSD lacks Citizens’ Bond Oversight

Just joined this forum, thanks all. I am unaffiliated with any political party but I am sympathetic with your group’s concerns about how things may go less than well with government bonds. This past Tuesday, 5/4/2021, the San Francisco Unified School District held a Special Meeting where @starchild and myself gave public comment of how the School Board has no Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee (CBOC) for the 2016 Proposition A Facilities Bond, $744.25 MM. There have been several meetings over the past few months where citizen voters have raised concerns and the actions of the Board and District have been suboptimal. If this topic is of interest, I can add more information.

The SF Bond Oversight Committee is nothing but a bond rubber stamp organization that publishes propaganda about how great the bond money is being spent. I went there and asked for a record of all the times the Oversight Committee found bond money misappropriated. They sent me to a computer and gave me access. The only things I could find were sanctions were applied was when a supervisor dealt with an employee in an inappropriate manner.

Otherwise, nothing. Not a single complaint.

Thanks for looking into them in the past. As @Starchild and many mentioned this week, there hasn’t been any group doing the Oversight since maybe 2018. That’s over $200 million in spending without audit review, without meetings, without site visits, without any questions. Spending per site has ballooned, spending may be out of scope, some money may have been spent on non-capital projects, and that may be just the beginning. It’s the living version of the concerns the Libertarian Party wrote when opposing the 2016 Proposition. Aaand they are preparing a November 2020 Proposition for $1B.
