[sfbarentersfed] San Francisco Nudges Homeless Away From Super Bowl Fan Village

Robert,

Excellent point that capitalism is not really a system, so much as it is simply what happens in the absence of aggression and the systematic violation of economic freedom.

However I would quibble with Adam Smith's contention that "every individual necessarily labours to render the annual revenue of the society as great as he can." It's been a long time since I read "The Wealth of Nations" and I cannot recall whether he elsewhere deals with the "free rider" issue, but here he seems to sidestep it. Experience suggests that every individual will not seek to maximize his/her productivity to the benefit of society. Some people will always seek to live off the beneficence of society without contributing much if anything. That's okay. The costs of trying to systemically eliminate this behavior are worse than the problem itself. But society must set limits to its beneficence – specifically, it must draw the line at coercion.

Exactly!
