Thanks Mike. Good to hear that Aaron Peskin is talking about trying to bring the Patrol Specials back. I don’t expect it to happen at this point, but still. Worth weighing in on at the Police Commission, if they take it up.

I just attended (virtually) tonight’s meeting of the Haight-Ashbury Neighborhood Council (HANC), and they had Supervisor Peskin as a guest speaker. I took the opportunity to thank him for trying to bring back the Patrol Specials, and suggested as another reform not allowing people to make anonymous complaints to city government that could generate a harmful police response, citations, or other harmful consequences to those being snitched on.

I posted a link in their chat to the Oakland-based libertarian Independent Institute’s 2009 white paper on the Patrol Specials – https://www.independent.org/pdf/working_papers/74_privatepolicing.pdf.

And made a pitch in the chat for using some of the city government’s massive spending on homelessness to give tiny homes and tiny plots of land to homeless people, along with cutting the salaries of high-paid government officials! Along with posting this graphic, which probably wasn’t much appreciated by the left-leaning crowd, but still good info for any who might be on the verge of an ideological shift…

Great to see you standing up for the Patrol Specials. This is a very long-running private sector response to the need for security and it is a shame that the city is strangling it.

Thanks, Marc.

I’ve begun saying “voluntary sector” rather than “private sector”. Too many people when they hear “private” think “elitist”, “for-profit”, “selfish”, etc. As I often point out, government is no less a for-profit operation than many in the voluntary sector, only instead of having investors, shareholders and executives, it has politicians, bureaucrats, and special interest donors.

Governments have wrongfully monopolized the word “public”. I believe any business that serves the public is a public business, any school open to the general public is a public school, etc., even if they are privately owned and operated. “Public” need not mean “government-owned”, “government-funded”, or “government-controlled”.
