As those who are subscribed to our activists list (LPSF-Activists@forum.lpsf.org) already know, we submitted five ballot arguments last week, three of which won the “lottery” to be selected as the official opponent arguments to appear in the Voters Handbook for the upcoming November election! These are arguments against Proposition A (a $790 million school bond which is projected to actually cost $1.3 billion), Proposition H (firefighters trying to get more taxpayer money for their pensions), and Proposition I (nurses and 911 operators trying to get more taxpayer money for their pensions).
Besides helping disseminate libertarian views, and getting some visibility for the Libertarian Party, one of the benefits of filing ballot arguments like these is that it tends to lead to invitations to go before different groups and speak about them measures we’re opposing. This morning I got an email from Nuala Bishari, with the San Francisco Chronicle, asking me to come on a Zoom call tomorrow afternoon with some of their editorial board members and City Hall journalists to discuss the propositions.
Since this is happening online, it’s a good opportunity for other freedom lovers to join us and see what kind of questions writers for the city’s “newspaper of record” will ask, as well as to be there for moral support. I’m not sure whether you’ll get a chance to speak directly or ask questions, but at the least, the presence of others on the call may help ensure they treat me more respectfully! Some years ago I went to the Chronicle offices for a similar meeting and their editorial page editor at the time was rather condescending. Also, I do plan to try to ask them a few questions as well, about their news coverage of alternative parties, specifically the LP and our presidential ticket (www.VoteChaseOliver.com), and the issue of ideological diversity or viewpoint diversity, or lack thereof, in their newsroom. Having others present to weigh in on this as well, if that chance is afforded, could be helpful, especially if you happen to be Chronicle readers.
Anyway, the call is scheduled for 1pm, and I’m told will be about 45 minutes, with me having 15 minutes or so to talk about the ballot measures or bring up other issues, and then the rest of the time for Q and A. Nuala, their editorial writer who contacted me, said that besides herself, participants will likely include editorial page editor Matt Fleischer, board member and columnist Emily Hoeven, and possibly one or more City Hall journalists she’s invited to sit in.
