Scott Wiener is a policy wonk type, very smart, politically savvy, hard worker. For a politician, he's relatively unafraid to wade into policy debates. If you can think of some good white paper or other wonkish and generally pro-freedom material to bring along that pertains to some local hot issue, and give it to him to read, he might actually read it. (Even if it doesn't change his mind, it could help him avoid spending that time doing something else less constructive!) Prior to being elected, and then reelected, as District 8 supervisor (I ran against him the first time, in 2010), Wiener was chair of the San Francisco Democratic Party, and a deputy city attorney. He is seen as a "moderate" on the board (i.e. in the more-conservative-by-SF-standards mayor Lee camp), often taking the pro-economic-freedom side (as much as such can be found in SF supervisorial debates) on issues such as housing and development and business, but has a disturbing tendency to champion authoritarian or nanny state crusades such as criminalizing sitting on the sidewalk, criminalizing nudity, taxing soda, criminalizing people who use the parks at night, etc. Good luck!

The purpose of the event was to encourage him to run for the state Senate. I guess Mark Leno is being term limited out. Looks like he'd be running against Jane Kim and maybe Tom Ammiano although he never mentioned any interest in running for that office. The hosts mentioned it.
He was very smart. The event was run by some guys involved with the Young Democrats. The average age of the event was probably 35. There were some fairly "progressive" (I hate that word) people there who seemed to want more government in just about every area of our lives making comments to Scott and asking questions during his talk. I have to say Scott was VERY evenhanded and never took the bait of playing into their hand....always speaking for the other side of the issues and how complicated things were.
Over all a very pleasant event and I got to meet many of my new younger neighbors...a pleasant change in this neighborhood. All Democrats.

Thanks for the report Mike! I was hoping you would post one. Yes, Scott Wiener is pretty "fair." He gives credit where credit is due, and speaks out against specific issues in a respectful way. If he ends up running against Jane Kim, we should all register Democrat and start campaigning for him.
It is indeed always interesting to see how intensely much of the San Francisco general public desires government to run their lives.

I know you were joking about registering Democrat Marcy, but I'm not sure that Jane Kim is worse than Scott Wiener overall. She might be, but she's definitely better on some issues. It's also a little hard to know what a local politician's priorities will be in the state legislature. Mark Leno, like Wiener, was viewed as a "moderate" member of the Board of Supervisors, but in Sacramento he has -- for better and for worse -- been quite the radical.

Jane Kim earned enough negative points in my scale with Prop K last November to relegate her to Hades for eternity. Her view of housing entitlement does not hold a candle to Wiener's wanting to tax overweight folks or cater to merchants not wanting nudies driving away business.
Yes, you are correct that we never know what any politician, including Libertarians, will do once in office. However, we have no crystal ball at the voting booth, so best we can do is vote based on the candidates' track record.
