In other words, they succeed by doing just what government-school
defenders sometimes accuse voluntary schools of doing -- being
selective about which students they accept.

I think "dating" is still current terminology, along with "seeing"
and "going out with." Do you happen to know any more about what kinds
of arts are mainly focused on at School of the Arts? It would be
helpful to know this in terms of what to say to the students.
