SB1 Hearing is Tomorrow--Please Make Some Calls Today

Hi All! This bad bill has another hearing tomorrow since it passed the last committee in the State Assembly and has now moved on to the State Assembly Appropriations Committee. Please help to make some calls today stating your opposition to this bill. It will lead to increased taxes and is a threat to all the property owners in California, and all the decisions will be made by government bureaucrats and their actions will not be subject to voter approval--a recipe for disaster. I will make my calls tonight when I get home. It's quite a long list, so if you don't have time to call them all, then I would probably pick just Democrats to call, since the Republicans seem to have been pretty good on this issue so far.

Thanks!
Aubrey

Folks,

Let's get some calls in! This piece of legislation is HORRIBLE.

I just called all the Democrats. Whole process took 12 minutes -- perfect for working the phones over a lunch break. If it seems like a lot of calls: I am home sick from work today, and I could manage it.

They'll generally ask for:

Stance (Opposition)
Bill (Senate Bill 1)
Name
City of residence

Most will tell you they'll note your opposition. If they don't, just ask them kindly to do so.

I got a hold of live people in every office except Gomez (where I left a message). Keep your message brief and stick to those four factors, since the person answering your call is measuring sentiment broadly and taking a LOT of calls.

- Matt

Hi Matt! Thanks for making the calls. I had trouble getting through with voice messages last night (several mail boxes were full), so I'm going to take my list to work and step out to my car this morning and call the few Assembly members that I couldn't get through to last night. The hearing is not until 1:30 PM today, I believe. Couldn't get through to Mike Gatto and will ask whoever answers the phone what's up with his resignation and why the website hasn't been updated. Government as usual!

Thanks for making the calls and hope you are feeling better!
Aubrey

It turns out we were wrong about Gatto.

Hi Matt and All! Pretty good news to report on the SB1 front. I finished up my calls today, and it was much more productive talking to live people than navigating through the State's dysfunctional voice mail system. Had a nice chat with the aide from Assemblyman Donald Wagner's office. Turns out SB1 has been put on "Suspense File," which is a good thing if you don't like a bill--it's like a roadblock. The powers that be in the committee have determined that there will be big enough costs to this bill beyond the threshold of $50K that it won't be considered again until Friday, August 30. On that day it will be looked at again, along with hundreds of other bills, so the likelihood of it making it through the committee that day doesn't sound so good. Not sure what happens between August 30 and September 13, but if the bill doesn't get to the floor of the Assembly and passed by September 13, then it's dead in the water for this year. So, for
now, there's a roadblock and not too much time left for the bill to get passed this legislative season. Something hopeful, for a change!

You're right about that Gatto business, Matt. His office was one I couldn't get through last night, so I called and spoke with a not particularly friendly aide today, and she confirmed that he is still the chair of the committee. Wagner's aide mentioned that there had been a lot of turnover lately, so maybe it was somebody else that resigned.

Thanks!
Aubrey
