Dear All,
At the last Beer Burst/Free Exchange, the guest speaker discussed the Bay Area's "Sustainable Development" plans. I have not found a lot of useful information on this on the Internet, but this website proved frightening enough: http://www.sustainable-city.org/Plan/Intro/intro.htm
It seems that the Tea Party has been speaking out against this plan, attending meetings, disrupting implementation, etc. I shamefully admit, I never heard of this plan until the Free Exchange discussion.
As an aside, and feel free to call me paranoid, I cannot help but think that implementation is occurring not just in planning meetings, but in proposed legislation, such as the proposal to do away with Recology on the last ballot. As I pointed out, the proposed legislation made sure to catch the eye of libertarians/conservatives by throwing in "competitive bidding," while downplaying the fact that waste management would pretty much change from private control/ownership to City control/ownership.
It would be useful if we somehow developed the incentive to get involved in local politics. And I freely admit, I have not attended a City Hall meeting in a while.
