Richmond City Council meeting on Flock surveillance cameras (Thursday March 19, 630pm, online/Richmond)

Dear Libertarians,

I found out the Richmond City Council will be discussing Flock surveillance cameras at their upcoming meeting on Thursday, March 19.

This is continued from a previous meeting. Apparently they had these cameras up in Richmond before, but then started getting pushback about them sending info to the federal government and ICE, and took them down. Now there are folks trying to get them put them back in again!

It’s a hot issue around the state, with many local governments being pushed to dismantle their surveillance equipment. So if Richmond puts them back in, that would be a very negative development that Libertarians should be interested in stopping. If you can attend, please do. You don’t have to live in Richmond – the meeting is online via Zoom. I assume people can attend in person as well, and I’m going to try to go in person, because I think that’s more effective, and there will likely be media there as well as the opportunity to connect with other surveillance opponents.

Richmond City Hall is at 450 Civic Center Plaza in Richmond, which is just a few blocks from Richmond BART station. They haven’t posted an agenda yet, but the meetings usually start at 630pm. When an agenda is posted, you should be able to find it here – Council Agenda Documents | Richmond, CA - Official Website.

Here’s the remote participation info:

PASSCODE: ccmeeting

Or VIA PHONE: 1-669-900-6833

I found out about this on X/Twitter – there’s a link to a story that mentions the upcoming meeting, and more in the discussion thread here (note that the claim about vehicle theft increasing appears to be false – see @SanFranciscoLP and other responses). We also called out the initial poster (Trevor Chandler, who ran for Supervisor in San Francisco) for being a public relations employee of the Flock company, after this was pointed out by another respondent in the thread!

Vehicle thefts increased 33% in Richmond after they turned off Flock. Taking away common sense public safety tools has real consequences. https://nbcbayarea.app.link/5MO3UoXId1b |
