Marcy,
I don't think such a venue exists (one that would appeal to all). For instance, I'm opposed to holding conventions in the kind of hotels we typically use, while some others (e.g. Mark Hinkle) seem to be opposed to anything else.
However, Mike Denny's proposal would be much less exclusionary than a cruise. There is a big difference between not wanting to do something because you might not have all the comforts and convenience which you would normally expect, and not being able to do something because you can't afford it.
Also, since the Headlands Institute is on land, people who could not attend the entire convention due to work or other commitments would presumably be able to attend at least part of it on the days they were available. This is not an option with a cruise, since you are either on the boat or off the boat and there is no middle ground.

Your point is very well taken. However, it reiterates my argument
