Because most people socialize only with people like themselves,
egocentrism/ethnocentrism is a chronic risk. I went off to Oberlin from
Alabama in 1964 confidently expecting Goldwater to win. I was quite
surprised to find only 8 Goldwater supporters on campus. Pauline Kael
famously predicted that McGovern would win in 1972 because she didn't
know a single person who was voting for Nixon. But if your business is
politics, it behooves you to get to know the world outside your own
neighborhood.
