Reminder - Candidate Forum - Thursday Oct. 19, 7pm, GLBTQ Center - 1800 Market Street at Octavia

Hope to see some of you tonight!

I'll be appearing alongside Bevan Dufty and Alix Rosenthal again this Thursday for the League of Women Voters event. It should be a big one -- their School Board event had an audience of about 100. Note that "space is limited," and you can email questions in advance to lwvsf@... .

Thanks, Emily! I do think I did pretty well tonight, and hope to eventually get a copy of the tape of the event. If I find out when it's supposed to air, I'll let everyone know. Thanks also to Phil and Marcy for coming out. I had a few non-libertarian friends show up who are not on this list too, but I know there was too much applause for my partisans to be generating all of it! Not that I necessarily got more positive audience feedback than the other two candidates, but at least it wasn't overwhelmingly against me.

Phil and I both urged some of the League of Women Voters and GLBTQ Community Center folks there to have a debate for Congress, and we need to keep the pressure on them to do this, especially the League. The fact that Nancy Pelosi has apparently been in office 20 years without debating her challengers since the first time she ran, and shows every intention of doing it again this cycle when she could become Speaker of the House, is nationally newsworthy. As is the fact that the head of the local LWV is apparently the PR person for the Presidio Trust, an organization largely created and controlled by Nancy Pelosi, and the LWV (unlike its branches in many other parts of the country) is not planning to host any congressional debate, is also newsworthy. Please write to the Center <info@...> and the League <lwvsf@...> and tell them that you want to see a congressional debate!

After the forum, I was approached and briefly interviewed by a reporter named Andy (whose card I now can't seem to find) from radio station The Quake, home of the left-wing Air America radio program. He invited me to appear on the show, and said they'd had Bevan Dufty on already but they mostly just talked about his kid and stuff without getting into too many issues. [Bevan's been in the news recently for having a child with his non-romantic female living partner (he is gay), and having a relationship where both of them may have other lovers at some point. Pete Wilson of KGO called the relationship a "travesty," fueling many calls for Wilson's resignation and forcing him to apologize. I sent Bevan a note saying I supported him on the issue, but it did not come up at the forum, which took only pre-written questions from the audience.]

Next Thursday I'll be going in to the Chronicle from 10:30am to noon. They're actually doing a kind of debate-style format, with all three of us appearing at the same time, and getting timed responses to their questions. I suspect the public is not welcome, but I would like to try to bring Phil with me again as a way of pressuring them to cover the Congress race too.

Which reminds me, Steve Jones (Alix Rosenthal's boyfriend and City Editor of the Guardian) was at the debate tonight too, and I told him what a low blow I thought Tim Redmond had done with his front-page hit piece, and that I'm still waiting for an apology or them to print my letter, and that I hope for some actual substantial coverage from the Guardian before the election. Naturally he defended Tim's action, so that's probably going nowhere, but it needed to be said, and he was definitely on the defensive about the whole thing.

One more "good job, thank you" to our candidates from me. But
additionally, I would like to especially express my admiration for
the candidates' *courage*. It takes courage to sit in front of a 99%
Democrat/Liberal audience and talk about privatization of the MUNI,
which Starchild did last night. Way to go, Starchild and Phil.
