RE: [lpsf-discuss] "Walkabout" idea

Excellent idea Starchild....and it sounds like a real good time too.

Great Mike! We've already got five people - you, me, Mike Acree, Francoise,
and Raphael. Who else is in? Once we get eight, let's pick a time and place.

Sounds like fun; I'd be up for it.

I think we should have a specific goal in mind, first - that'll help decide
the time and place. Are we collecting signatures for Mike? If so, we have
to wait until 30 May. Are we trying to turn registered Ls in to
dues-payers? If so, we should pick an area dense in registered Ls.

What's the plan?

I'll join if the time and place is convenient.
So count me as 1/2.

Chris,

Good points. I'm for starting sooner rather than later; we can
always go again after May 30 to collect signatures for Mike. An area dense
in registered Libertarians would be good, certainly. An area with high foot
traffic would also be good, if we're going to be carrying around signs. We
can always talk with people on the street as we go. Someone (Bryce?) did an
analysis of the votes I got in my race for State Assembly by district;
targetting an area where people seem more disposed to vote for Libertarians
would also make sense. An area with restaurants and bars in close proximity
would be helpful if we're going out afterward. A relatively central
location doesn't hurt when people are coming from different parts of town.
Somewhere with too many apartment buildings won't do as well, since we
can't very well walk around from door to door inside a building.

Given these criteria, I would tentatively suggest either the upper
or lower Haight as a "walkabout" neighborhood. IIRC, the district which
includes those neighborhoods (Dist. 5) gave me my best vote percentage, and
they meet the other criteria (with the possible exception of having a good
concentration of registered Libertarians, as I have no idea which areas are
best for that).

If we want to have another petition, which I think would be great,
I suggest we vote on a topic to put forward as a ballot initiative,
establish a committee to work on drafting it, and run it by some lawyers.
I've come up with a few possible ideas for measures:

(1) A measure requiring the SFPD to provide protection for cannabis clubs
in San Francisco against being raided by the feds.

(2) A measure requiring police officers to have their badge numbers printed
in large print, football jersey style, on the backs of their uniform shirts
or jackets.

(3) A measure capping the salaries of city government officials at $99,999
a year.

(4) Another try at the measure the LP pushed here a couple decades ago to
abolish the SFPD's vice squad.

(5) A measure prohibiting city curfews or quarantines on the basis of age,
race, religion, sexual orientation, or HIV status.

(6) An "alternative transportation" measure repealing laws against
skateboarding and roller skating on city streets, and allowing persons
using such forms of transportation to use the sidewalk in places where it
is unsafe to skate in the street.

(7) A measure applying the Sunshine Ordinance to all local government
agencies and bodies, so that groups like City College, SFPD, and the
municipal courts* are no longer exempt from open government requirements.

*I'm not sure whether it's legally possible to mandate open courts in this
manner.

Perhaps others can come up with additional initiative ideas. We can
then vote from among the initiative ideas proposed.

Yours in liberty,
