Since there actually are states that eliminated their sales tax (or, like
Oregon, never had one in the first place), you can point to real world
examples where the government did not collapse as a consequence. I believe
the Cato Institute published a very well-written white paper on the subject
that could be cited in a reasoned argument on the issue.

Unfortunately, there are many more arguments out there (even from Cato) that
recommend replacing the income tax with a national sales tax, and I'm afraid
these have a bit more support from all sides of the spectrum. It's a shame
that replacing one form of taxation with another gets more public support
and debate than a proposal to eliminate certain taxes altogether.
