RE: [lpsf-discuss] Re: Prop 73

People who sell smut for a living and want the government to provide
easy access to irresponsible sexual behavior and prevent parents from
having anything to say about the consequences to their minor children
should just come out and say so Steve.

The reasons to vote against Prop 73 have already been clearly laid out
for anyone who wants to vote against it.

1) Prevents parents from requiring an unwilling child to get an
abortion.
2) Requires controversial definition of abortion
3) Mandates various reporting requirements presumably to government.

I actually don't sell content, but I'd have no problem with doing so.

I don't want the government used to empower parents to force their children to have children they don't want. I think I've been up front about that and about my motivations and the true rationale behind my perspective.

I'm a humanist utilitarian and make moral judgments on that basis. If you or anyone else has a different perspective that leads to different judgments, then we're only going to talk in circles if our perspectives are the real source of our the disagreements. So let's be open and honest about these things. Public politics may be about misdirection, but my hope is that our discussions can be more meaningful.

Looking back on this thread, I can see that my posts haven't been sensitive enough to your feelings and I apologize for that. I'm afraid I get emotional about these things too.

Mike,

"Smut"... there's a term I haven't heard in a while! It's got a nice sexy sound to it though -- rhymes with "slut." Clearly a word ripe for reclamation! Traditionally however, I believe that smut is "peddled" rather than simply being sold, though this may not be as common knowledge as the fact that cocaine is "trafficked" by "drug lords" rather than simply being imported by merchants the way most products are. 8)

I'm guessing you mean the reverse. It allows parents to prevent their
children from getting abortions by having the government criminalize
the act of performing the procedure in those cases where the child
wants the abortion and the parent does not. I really can't imagine any
case where a parent should be allowed to make this decision for their
child.

If someone thinks it's immoral based on a supernatural theory of souls,
they should just say so and we can debate the real issue. I would find
that discussion fascinating. For example, if souls enter the body at
conception, do identical twins (who are formed from cells
post-fertilization) have same soul, some fraction of a soul each, two
souls, etc? Do clones (which are not even fertilized) have the same
sole as the parent or none at all, etc?
