Terry,
On the other hand:
During my year on the LPCA EC, which met twice at LAX, and for last
year's convention, which met at LAX, I was fortunate to have a
sister living in Mission Viejo, at an hour's drive distance. Cost
of accomodations was therefore nothing. Had this not been possible,
I would not have served on the EC, or attended the convention.
Others, like yourself, book a Super 8 room, or overfill Motel 6
rooms, and so on, to get the price to a manageable level. With the
boat, these kind of options go away entirely.
Cost to get to the convention is of course a wash; makes no
difference if the destination is a hotel portal or a boat gangway,
ya gotta get there.
I've just confirmed with the booking agency (1-800-422-0711) that
the $299 "per person rate" is for a double occupancy. In other
words, an effective $600 is being paid by two people to buy a room
for 3 nights. That works out to $200 a night. Last time I paid
that rate was for a resort room in Phoenix. Where the room had a
window, and there was more to look at than water.
While I am at it, 2 more points:
1) The advertised 4 days/3 nights borders on deceitful advertising.
What one actually gets is (confirmed with the agency):
Friday: earliest boarding, 12:00 Noon = 1/2 day
Saturday: All day, = 1 day
Sunday: All day, = 1 day
Monday: Off by 11:00 or sooner, = somewhat less than 1/2 day, =
total 3 days at most.
2) In order to get that one full day of fun in Ensenada (Sunday)
into the schedule. the convention is going to begin and end on
Saturday. To attempt to compress the usual two-day sausage into the
one day skin, the convention business is scheduled to run from 7:00
AM to 6:00 PM on Saturday, with an hour and a half for lunch. Given
how much has been left on the table at previous conventions for lack
of time to consider it, I'd really like to see the agenda for this
one before getting very enthusiastic about it.

Allen Rice

I am of two minds on this issue. While I object like many others

method by which the cruise ship convention was organized, I am

on going simply because it will be one of the most economical
conventions the LPC has hosted in many, many years.
Last year's convention in Los Angeles cost a great deal of money to
attend (e.g. transportation to and from southern California, hotel
charges of almost $100 per night, all of my meals). This was over
and
above the minimum delegate "floor fee" imposed by the convention
contractor (who still ended up losing money on the deal). Had I
purchased a full convention package, it would have added at least
another $250 to my expenses.
Even the most recent convention in the Bay Area cost a bundle
unless you
wanted to avoid hotel costs by driving back and forth from San Jose
every day. I'm so cheap I've sometimes gotten a room at a Super 8
motel
near the convention site just to be able to afford to attend and
represent my county as a delegate.
With the $299 all-inclusive fee for the LPC Cruise Convention
(which
includes all meals, all room charges and convention fees), this
looks
like it could turn out to be the cheapest convention we've ever had
(from the viewpoint of a delegate). And if anyone wants to
carpool down
to Los Angeles, a group of folks could share the fuel and parking
costs
for less than a cheap airline ticket.

Of course! Refraining from voting does not reduce one's
prerogative to critique decisions one thinks are mistaken. This is
especially true when one's failure to vote is itself instigated by
organizational decisions with which one disagrees.
I'm not interested in boycotting the convention; I don't expect to
go myself due to the cost, but I hope lots of our local activists
make it. However, I would like to see an amendment to the bylaws
requiring future conventions to be held on the mainland of
California.
