RE: [lpsf-activists] Why did the Jitneys disappear?

Thanks, Marcy, for this extremely helpful research. Noting that the insurance minimum was set by state law, one assumes that the jitneys' competitors may have had a hand in it. The minimum liability imposed on gas stations a few years ago put most of the independents out of business, to the benefit of the major oil companies, who made a pro forma squawk about regulation but probably lobbied hard for it. It looks as though our initiative couldn't go anywhere without repealing the state law, which is presumably outside our province.

I'm not so sure the $1M+ is a showstopper necessarily.
I know the cabs all carry that much already as well as
the airporters and vanpools. Granted cabs and limos
are higher margin services making it easier to absorb
the costs, but I don't remember any discussion here on
how much jitney's would have to charge to make them
viable muni alternates(nor do I think we should)

I think the big news here is that it wasn't
necessarily lack of curb access that put the original
jitney's out of business. It sounds more like basic
business aggregation was more of a factor(ie. fastpass
and nationalization). Certainly part-time drivers
faced with a sudden massive increase in insurance had
to decide which way to lead their careers as driving
10-20hrs a week probably didn't cover their costs. But
I suspect they would have gone under anyway - muni or
not. Maybe we should call that Abraham Endzweig guy
and see what he thinks.

Meanwhile, Muni's situation predictably worsens-

Maybe jitneys will start filling in the cracks of
service - ballot initiative or not??? hmmm
