RE: [lpsf-activists] First Invitation of the Election Season to Present Argument Against E (Soda Tax)

This is not a yes but just as the Jewish Democratic Club was Phil’s constituency, this is mine so I feel I should volunteer especially since I mostly wrote the arguments. I’m pretty sure I’ll be in town then but I’ve never done this kind of thing so I’m a little wary of putting myself forward. Do you know what the format is?
If there is anyone else who would like to take this I’ll gladly take myself out of consideration.

Hi All. The Junior League of San Francisco, a woman’s group, has invited us to present the opposing argument at their meeting in Pacific Heights on Thursday, October 9 from 6-8 PM. They also mentioned Prop L (transportation priorities) for the opposing argument, but I think they got their letters mixed up, so I let them know that we endorsed L but opposed C (expanded Children’s Fund) and G (surtax on flipping apartment buildings), so they might come back to us and ask us to present against C and/or G. Who is available to present for us? As always, I will pick up and deliver.

Thanks!

Francoise,

If you're willing, I'm sure you'd do an excellent job, and I think it's great for all of us to get practice at this sort of thing, and for more of us to be visible as Libertarians in the community.

I assume Aubrey told them we'd send someone, and amongst our group I'm sure it won't be a problem for someone to be there; I think we've got some time to see who specifically. I'm generally willing and able to do these kinds of appearances myself, but it's kind of far off yet for me to want to commit for certain, and like you I'm happy if someone else wants to try presenting to a particular group.

Love & Liberty,
                                 ((( starchild )))

Hi Francoise and Starchild. Thanks, both of you, for volunteering for the job. I already responded back to the organization that we'll have someone there on October 9. I said that I would do it if no one else volunteered, especially since it's in the evening.

I presented our argument against Prop A (earthquake safety bond) last fall at the Potrero Hill Democratic Club, and it wasn't such a big deal. You just get up and talk for a few minutes presenting our side, and they were polite, if unconvinced. Then you ask if anyone has any questions, and one lady did have one. I thought I would have a hard time speaking for a few minutes, but once you get going, the time passes quickly.

Usually these forums try to do one proposition at a time, first the pro side and then the opposing side, so there's some kind of continuity to the discussion for the audience. However, sometimes the presenters show up at different times, so they have to jump around a bit. I assume that they will try to stick to some kind of schedule, and usually they tell you in advance what time you're "on." She mentioned five minutes for the presentation and then a little Q&A afterwards. That's about the length of time I was "on" for Prop A.

I can pick up whichever of you is going to present since I'd like to be there too. As we get closer to the date, the organization will give us a specific time and exact location.

Thanks for volunteering!
Aubrey
