RE: [lpsf-activists] August Newsletter -- call for articles!

I have some ideas Nick about possible submissions from the good people working on the Geary Street BRT. Very interesting project as it is Statist Democrats fighting Local people Democrats. And the locals appear to be winning.

What is our newsletter circulation? I’ll see if we can get something interesting from them

SFMTA Planners have failed in being open and honest with Seniors, Disabled, and Public Transit Advocates. Slick PR tricks designed to fool the public now reveal the true nature of the Agency and the Supervisors who support it.

Help San Franciscans for Sensible Transit fight to keep MUNI Safe and Accessible for all public Transit Riders by contributing $5 to $2,500 towards the only active lawsuit that can force MUNI Planners to come clean with the public and retool thier policies for Transit Riders rather than political special interests.

GearyBRT Advocate Puts SFMTA Planners on Blast!

Private transit does not belong in dedicated bus lanes<https://awmasf.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d4d7a252727c19490f8972dbf&id=911018b2c8&e=ea866322e5>

A segment From this week's SF Examiner Op-Ed with SFMTA CAC Advisory Council Member Sue Vaughan

"But never in all of these years of arguing has any member of the public imagined that the dedicated bus lanes themselves would only be “dedicated” in the broadest sense of the word. Now, according to San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) staff, transit-only lanes planned for Geary Boulevard between Gough and Stanyan will be open to any vehicle that meets the California Vehicle Code (CVC) definition of a bus – any vehicle that transports more than 10 people. That means casino buses, tour buses, Chariots, and tech shuttle buses and others would all be able to compete with Muni for lane space.
This is absolutely contrary to the public’s longstanding understanding of how Geary BRT (bus rapid transit) would work.
Yet in response to a July SFMTA Citizens Advisory Council question, staff has written, “Most of the new transit-only lanes within the Geary Rapid Project” could be used by vehicles that meet the California Vehicle Code (CVC) bus definition, so “commuter shuttles or private transit vehicles such as Chariot would be allowed to use the lanes.”

A Segment from today's SF Examiner Article

"In a July email Brisson sent to her colleagues, which was obtained by Vaughan, Brisson wrote “This might be a dumb question, but I wasn’t certain so I didn’t answer at the meeting. I have a recollection from Ian that transit is defined by # of seats in the vehicle. But in Section 7.2.72 of the Transportation Code, it specifically mentions “public transit vehicles” … Do you know? Thanks, Liz.”
Indeed, Vaughan’s inquiry even prompted a meeting between a bevy of SFMTA planners, including Muni Forward program manager Sean Kennedy and Brisson.
That reason for that meeting was laid out in a memo for the planners, which read, “Prompted by a question at SFMTA CAC about whether Chariot and Tech Shuttles could use the transit only lanes, the purpose of this meeting is to discuss whether we might legislate as Muni/(Golden Gate Transit)/Taxi Only Lanes.”
Vaughan said she was particularly troubled the planners were unclear over whether private transit vehicles should use the red lanes, as the Geary Rapid project has been studied and planned for more than a decade. She wasn’t the only one concerned.
“Given the amount of buses that run on Geary, Muni deserves its own lane without any other conflicts,” said Rachel Hyden, executive director of the transit riders group."

Hey Mike,
Yes, getting guest posts from other groups is a great idea! We reach
over 1600 Libertarians with our newsletter. I would only ensure that
they have a pro-liberty message to share. Some of what you included
below is not so obvious to me. I like that they are pushing back
to hold MUNI accountable, but it seems they still believe that "good
government" should monopolize transit. I don't like near Geary though,
so there may be more to it than I know. Can you briefly sum up how this
group embodies Libertarian values?
Thanks,
Nick

Hi all,

I know we're all very, very busy, and I don't want to ask too much--
but a Libertarian's job is never done. After a bit of a bumpy road the
past couple of months, I'd like to see us stick to a schedule for our
newsletter and continue get it out reliably before the end of the
month going forward.>

I know some of you have a burning passion to write about whichever
issue matters most to you-- maybe 300 words wasn't quite enough for
your ballot argument. Our website is a soap box for all
Libertarian preaching and knowledge sharing. Use it! I'm not much of a
writer myself, but I pledge to these regularly-- hopefully one a month
once-- it's good exercise.>

Please don't wait to send me any articles you write!

*I will try to send out the newsletter on the 28th. *Please let me
know if you plan to contribute something for this month or any
upcoming.>

Thanks,

Nick
