Outdoor meetings

Starchild,

If your purpose of an outdoor meeting is to attract more members, then run an experiment: compare the average # of attendees at the past six meetings with the attendance at the outdoor meeting.

I'd be happy to wager dinner at the vegetarian restaurant of the winner's choice that the outdoor meeting will have a poorer showing.

Best, Michael

Michael,

I'm not opposed to a friendly wager over indoor/outdoor meeting attendance, but first I'd like to give the outdoor meetings a chance to get started. I hope you will find time to address the suggestions I gave in my last message below about how we might arrange such meetings so that it would be convenient for you to attend, and the other points in that message which went unanswered.

Michael,

I wasn't aware that you have a medical aversion to sunlight. Is this
why I haven't received an invitation to a 4th of July hike and
picnic
on the beach in the last couple years? You and Janice used to host
such
outings on an annual basis.

It shouldn't be too hard to find an outdoor meeting area that has
shade available, and that is certainly a reasonable criterion for
choosing a site. Looking at the Golden Gate Transit map, I notice
that
the #10 bus which goes down Geary Blvd. also goes by Yerba Buena
Gardens downtown (between 3rd and 4th and Mission and Howard
streets),
which I think could be an excellent place to meet. It has a good mix
of
sun and shade and not only is it conveniently located to most
transportation, but the adjacent Metreon has restroom facilities and
a
variety of restaurants to which we could retreat in the unlikely
event
of rain. One potential downside is the possibility of entertainment
events taking place there, but the area is big enough that I think
even
if something were happening onstage, we could find a place to meet
comfortably toward the opposite end.

Alternately, if we chose a site in Golden Gate Park or elsewhere,
you
might be able to arrange a ride at least over to Geary to catch the
bus. I've been carpooling with Bryce to our regular meetings for
some
time because it's not that convenient for me to arrive by public
transit.

As to the purpose of meeting outdoors, what can I say? Try walking
through a park on a nice summer day and asking a few people why they
are outside instead of cooped up in a windowless room somewhere, and
maybe you will gain some insight. Eric Brenner has told me before
that
he would be more likely to come to outdoor meetings, and other
people
have expressed a desire for such meetings in the past. I imagine
that a
lot of potential meeting attendees might feel the same.

Marcy,

I probably would not be able to attend an outdoor meeting. I
usually
take the Golden Gate bus home to Tiburon after the meeting. There
is
no GG bus stop in walking distance of most of the outdoor venues
suggested. Moreover, due to a medical condition (atopic dermatitis)
it's best for me to stay out of the sun.

In addition, the time involved with the logistics of finding a site
and having the membership debate and vote on it could much more
productively be served working for liberty.

Further, over the past few months (and years!) in my job responding
to
LPSF voice mail inquiries, I've informed individuals (as does our
website) we regularly meet the second Sat. of the month at Round
Table
Pizza. A change in venue could exclude some of these people along
with those who sporadically attend.

I would think these outdoor meetings would result in significantly
reduced attendance among our activists, also.

I'm not clear on the purpose of outdoor meetings. If it is to get a
sun tan, I believe the best hours are between 10A and 400P.

Best, Michael

If we order from Roundtable in order to appease them, and we make
every effort to give notice of meeting change, and we are OK with
not
making reservations, I am 100% in favor of trying an outdoor
meeing.
I would suggest hearing from some members, just in case there is a
downside we have not thought of. Anybody for bringing an LPSF
sign?
No harm generating some publicity in the process.

Marcy,

Ordering pizza from Round Table is a great suggestion! I

can't imagine

they'd penalize us in terms of having the room on other months

under

such an arrangement. Now that we have a newsletter again, we can
readily notify members about any change of meeting venue, and of

course

post something on the website. We could also make a sign to post
at

the

restaurant during the appointed hours, if Round Table was OK with

that.

I don't think the authorities demand a permit just to have a

picnic in

the park, only if you want to reserve specific tables at specific
times. My preference would be that we simply pick a meeting point

in

the general vicinity of our planned picnic area and then once

arrived,

find a nice free spot on the grass. Our business doesn't really

require

sitting around a table or tables, and it looks like reserving a

site in

Golden Gate Park would cost us at least $50 per meeting (see
http://www.gearjammin.com/twisty/ggp_permit.html ). If not giving

the

government any more of our money was the prior argument against
reserving a park site, I certainly understand the sentiment.

Wow! That's an idea! But, the downsides need to be worked out.

Do we

lose our Round Table privileges if we do not show up? How can we
adequately advise people we will not be at the Round Table, as
we

have

said we would be? I remember some in our group were dead set

against

making reservations for a space in the park; I would not be in

favor

of a park meeting without proper reservations if they are

necessary.

I'll bring Triscuits and brie. Or we can order pizza from the

Round

Table if that will appease them.

In the past we have sometimes discussed the idea of holding

we

start an annual tradition of having a potluck meeting outdoors

our

warmest

in

SF).

Somewhere in Golden Gate Park would be one obvious

possibility. Or we

could choose a park located in a different part of the city,

such as

Dolores Park, South Park, Alamo Square, Buena Vista Park, etc.,

for

those who are inconvenienced by having to go way out in the

Richmond

district the rest of the year. Thoughts? Anyone have any

suggestions

for a potential site?
