Open debates victory!

A judge has forced NBC to include Dennis Kucinich in a presidential debate, threatening to shut it down if the Democratic congressman was kept out. Like the recent decision I posted about where a court ruled shopping malls have to allow free speech access, some libertarians may question the morality of this move, but I think it is a victory that we should welcome. These media events serve as a de facto part of the nominating process via which candidates are elected to public office, and there appears to be a strong institutional bias the way MSM outlets cover the news that works against alternative candidates -- not to mention specific pro-establishment and anti-libertarian attitudes among media decision-makers.

Dear Starchild;

Are you sure about Kucinich being legally allowed by a judge to be at
the debate? This is what was on the AP about Kucininch NOT being
there or allowed to be there.

From the AP article about the so-called debate:

Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich had hoped to have a seat at the table, but
the Nevada Supreme Court ruled shortly before the debate began that
MSNBC was legally entitled to prevent him from participating. It
promptly did.

Apparently the Nevada State Supreme Court over-ruled a lower court
decision. Do you know if Kucinich filed in the federal district court
or Nevada State court? The federal may have trumped the state court
but if he filed in state superior court the State Supreme Court
trumped the lower court.

Sort of like the Bush vs. Gore getting the US Supreme Court to over
rule the Florida State Supreme Court.

Politics prevail as usual and why should MSM recognize some low level
candidate and give hime a chance to have his voice heard by people
who might even vote for him?

The only low level candidate to ever get the media exposure was of
course Ross Perot. He lucked out with his 5% support to get invited
to the debates. When Reagan had thge fairness doctrine overturned
that was the end of any chance by a low level candidate to get any
MSM exposure.

Dear Starchild,

Yesterday the push for open and inclusive presidential debates

scored

a major victory.

A judge ruled that NBC had unfairly excluded Dennis Kucinich from
their televised debate in Las Vegas. And the judge ordered NBC to
include Kucinich or he'd stop the debate.

This is a groundbreaking legal decision. Never before has a
presidential candidate won a decision for inclusion into a

televised

debate.

This victory is a direct result of our efforts at
IndependentPrimary.Com. Tens of thousands of you have signed
petitions, called the television networks and sent faxes and

emails

demanding open debates.

Congratulations to us all!

And watch for our new IndependentPrimary.Com vote coming soon

(before

the "Super Duper Tuesday" on February 5th).
