Today is WORLD FARM ANIMALS DAY: October 2nd has been set aside as a day when caring people are conscience-bound to mourn and memorialize the pointless suffering and death of 50 billion cows, pigs, turkeys, chickens, and other innocent, sentient animals in the world's factory farms and slaughterhouses. There is some good news:

Battery cages were banned in Switzerland over ten years ago. Germany is phasing them out by 2007, and the European Union by 2012.

Sow gestation crates have been banned in the United Kingdom and are being phased out in the European Union and New Zealand. Florida recently passed a constitutional amendment banning the use of gestation crates. Norway is banning the castration of pigs.

Yes. This is not tongue-in-cheek. The death and suffering of billions of animals is a subject of concern to me. I encourage you to check the websites listed below.
