Eerie to think that if this ludite contingent had any presence/influence
100 years ago, we might not have telephone lines, cable cars, the Sutro
tower or Golden Gate bridge. So many of the things we now consider
beautiful and indispensable parts of the City were once considered gaudy
and distasteful by the build nothing, change nothing movement. Of
course, activists alone aren't to blame; local government maintains the
public funded bureaucracy that allows a few NIMBYs to hold up any
private project they deem "ugly".
