Marcy,
I didn't think I was suggesting anything more technically
complicated. If the process for creating a poll changes drastically
after adding the third response choice is added, and you aren't sure
you could add more without risking a technical disaster, then I'd
agree with you it's better not to risk that.
However if the rationale behind limiting polls to only three response
choices is that we need to dumb down our material to that level, then
I disagree with the choice. Even with half a dozen options, we'd still
likely be talking fewer words than most of the commentary pieces that
appear on the site, and in an easier-to-digest format too.
But if you're still concerned that wouldn't be quick and simple
enough, you could just include with each poll a response option
labeled "Other" or "None Of The Above". It might not be the most
elegant approach, but I'd consider it a definite improvement over a
poll where the response choices excluded important points of view. For
what it's worth, it's a longstanding practice at Libertarian Party
conventions that NOTA (None Of The Above) must be offered as a choice
in elections for party office.
Inviting people to discuss the poll questions sounds like a good
idea, though ideally this would take place on the LPSF website rather
than sending people to Facebook (getting more traffic to our site
being the main point of having polls in the first place, iirc).
