This is a wonderful letter to the editor. Was it published and if so where?
Bob Parkhurst rmparkhurst@...
Thanks, everyone. I'm fairly sure it hasn't been published yet, as I just wrote it and sent it out today. So far it's gone to at least the following media outlets:
SF Chronicle
SF Examiner
Santa Rosa Press-Democrat
Fresno Bee
Boston Globe
Time Magazine
I'm still kind of in the process of establishing a separate address book category for letters to the editor; meanwhile I am going to continue going through the media addresses that I have and sending individual emails to each LTE address. It would be easier to send one email to all of them, of course, but I think that if a recipient sees they are not the only addressee, they're less likely to publish it. I've also made some small changes here and there, as seemed appropriate (for instance identifying myself with my Libertarian Party title rather than my candidate title for the non-local outlets).

Dear Starchild And Everyone Else;
Please note that several publications even for a Letters To Editor require an exclusive no other publication publishing.
As an example the Chronicle is this way. When the publication calls to confirm you wrote the LTE they will ask if you sent to any other publication. You must be truthful on this as they can blackball you if your exclusive LTE appears elsewhere.
This small problem can be addressed by re-writing the same LTE topic but using different words and phrases. Then you can truthfully say you did not send the LTE to other pubs for publication.

Ron,
That's interesting -- I don't recall ever being asked that, although it makes sense. Maybe it's been a while since the Chronicle was considering publishing one of my letters. However I imagine you might still be subject to blackballing if you answered "no" to the multiple recipients question and had merely changed a few words. If they noticed the other letter(s), they'd probably feel you'd been dishonest, and it'd be hard to blame them. Do you know which other publications besides the Chronicle have this policy?

Dear Starchild;
The NY Times and I'm sure there are others but that's based on specific editorial published policy. If they ask for aphone number for confirmation calls then you should expect a query about multiple send outs.
Also I don't mean changing a few words. On any topic you can approach it from several different angles. This means a differently worded LTE for each pub is possible although the core words can stay the same.
Thi is why you must choose your pubs selectively for LTE's.

Another tactic that Richard Rider uses with LTEs is to have other folks
sign the letter sent to different papers. He encourages getting more
Libertarian LTEs published, whether or not they bear his name because
it's more likely the letter will see print this way. The message needs
to get out and the more papers that print the letter (regardless of who
is listed as the author), the wider circulation of the message. The San
Diego Union-Tribune has a policy to not print more than one LTE from the
same person in any month, so Richard can sometimes have three letters
published in the Trib in four weeks, with the help of other Libertarians
willing to signing them.
