I'm on the same boat. I agree that monopolies can be as oppressive as a government; and the argument that a free market will automatically get rid of a monopoly is founded on the faulty assumption that investors, with enough money, can come up with better products to compete with monopolies in this new hi-tech era, as though it is easy for the entry of new firms coming up with entirely new technologies or products that don't infringe upon existing patent rights owned by the monopoly.
Although to the antitrust dissenters's credit, I'm not sure if the government has ever been successful at breaking up monopolies either. Maybe the telecommunications business is a close example, but I'm not sure I like the idea of the government assisting new firms to create competition. Maybe when done right, it is ok; but I don't have much confidence in our U.S. government in doing anything right. I'm really that cynical.
