LTE - Examiner (Mike Denny appearance, semantics)

Editor,

I just wanted to say thank you to J.K. Dineen for mentioning Libertarian mayoral candidate Mike Denny in the article about the 5 Together event — though it would have been nice for readers to hear what some of his ideas actually were, not merely that they "added spice" or were "greeted with scorn."

Also, the article used the word "progressive" to describe the audience at the event. I suggest instead using the word "leftist" in the future, as it is more objective. "Progressive" implies being for progress and change, and it seems a rather inaccurate choice to describe people who tend to be against most new development and are often rather lukewarm on technological progress in general.

Of course many leftists would prefer to be called "progressive," instead of "leftist," "liberal," or "socialist," but this is a simple consequence of the fact that the track record of people who espouse the policies they favor has given all those other words a bad name. I say let them live with the reputation their ideological comrades have sown.

Best wishes,
