You know, there's something else I forgot to mention. After we had shot the interview and Jonathan (the KGO cameraman) was filming his "stand up" (the bit where the anchor segues into my opposition) in front of the City College sign down at the end of the big building where they had the rally, I noticed two police squad cars and a truck with a siren on it sitting in a parking lot around the side. Guess what they said on them? San Francisco Community College District Police! Nearby curbs were also painted with "CCPD". (see attached photos I took)
Squad cars aren't exactly cheap. If CCSF can afford to maintain their own mini police department, I think they can still afford to tighten their belts quite a bit. Why can't they just call SFPD when there's a problem, like most other institutions in the city would, instead of having their own police force?
I pointed this out to Jonathan, and he told me he's noticed the cars before, and never seen them moved from the spots where they were parked (suggesting, not surprisingly, that they probably aren't getting much use). However he said he didn't want to bring this into the story when it really deserved a separate story of its own. From a journalistic perspective I could totally see his point of view, but the unfortunate reality is that if they get around to doing that story at all, it probably won't be prior to the election in the context of Proposition A.
