Hi Mike D.
You asked for our opinions, so here is my two cent’s worth. I
believe you are correct in starting this ball rolling. If we do not
want to end up on another cruise ship (not that everyone is opposed
to that idea, just that I am), we need to provide alternatives.
Being a numbers person, I think of the financial commitments first;
closely followed by the work commitments. It sounds great that you
are talking to a responsible events caterer, and it would be really
good if you could share the results of your talks with us, so that we
might have an idea of what is needed in the way of funds, i.e., how
much and when.
I can see many variables to choose from: find a way to require
everyone to pay what it costs (cruise), allow for a distribution of
costs (those that can/want to pay what it costs plus a little more
do), have a convention in the park (very little cost), require
prepayment in advance of planning (to cut planners’ risks; which
would be my personal preference), plan and take the financial risks
(what happens most times). So, I can visualize a lot of research if,
say, the LPSF were to bid for this event.
Personally, if asked, I would be happy to help with work needed, but
not with monetary investments. So, I am hoping there are others out
there with a lot more wherewithal whan I, so that we might have a
nice convtion, at a fair and reasonable cost to all.
