LP "Iraq Exit Plan"

I somehow missed this brouhaha until now. Would it be worthwhile to consider formally
opposing this at our meeting tomorrow?

The gist of the flap is that the LP has come up with a strategy that suggests foreign aid
and redeployment of troops to other parts of the region. Obviously, many find these
suggestions decidedly un-libertarian.

Or maybe we should just ignore National, as DC will undoubtedly do, and focus on
something more productive here at home.

Hi Morey,

This brouhaha is already on the Agenda for Saturday 9th under the
title "Anti-War Resolution." Actually, what is on the Agenda is a
resolution authored by Lawrence Samuels, LPCA Northern Vice Chair
(see the Files section of lpsf-activists for full text). There is
also a competing resolution by, I believe, LP Fresno. However, in
discussing Lawrence's resolution, we will also talk about the LP
National resolution which you mention.

The competing (and somewhat contradictory) resolution was authored by
D.A. "Art" Tuma, chair of the LP of Sacramento. Full text below.

Libertarian Party
Anti-War Resolution

WHEREAS Iraq intervened in the affairs of Kuwait -- a nation that
neither directly attacked nor threatened Iraq. Iraq's imperialist
invasion of Kuwait's sovereign territory was an attempt to impose Iraqi
rule over people in another land. Such overt hostilities are immoral and
contrary to the principles of the Libertarian Party.
WHEREAS the United States government refused to recognize Iraq's
conquest of Kuwait and Iraq's subsequent global call for death to
America to avenge feigned Iraqi genocide. America should continue its
historical libertarian tradition of protecting individual rights to
peaceful trade and travel and of avoiding entangling alliances, foreign
quarrels and imperialist threats by any means necessary and proper,
including military defense.
WHEREAS American foreign policy helped restore Kuwait's sovereignty and
Iraq's honesty to seek a world at peace with America, conducting foreign
policy upon the enlightened principles of mutual non-intervention. We
believe the withdrawal of anti-American forces as quickly as possible
from their deceitful pretense that Iraq neither directly attacked nor
threatened America will better insure safety from further terrorist
attacks and create a more manageable situation for elected governments
to represent peaceful policies.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED we demand the President and Congress act to end
the occupation of global news networks by anti-American deceit and
agitation for attacks.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Libertarian Party fully supports the Armed
Forces of the USA as led by the President and authorized by Congress to
end terrorist attacks on America.
See the National Libertarian Party Platform on its foreign policy
concerning defense against attack from abroad (which includes attacks by
non-observers of non-intervention such as the former ruling regime in
Iraq), May 2004
