Liberty Tree Campaign - Discussion For LPSF Monthly Meeting

Dear Everyone;

At the last LPSF meeting discussions were had on supporting a charity or charitable campaign. One of those was a Liberty Tree campaign to promote voluntary tree planting donations. Below and attached is a simple outline message and ways to promote the Liberty Tree program campaign.

It would be best if we worked in conjunction with established groups such a Friends Of The Urban Forest. These people have managed to plant some 1,600 trees a year - which still doesn't address the tree shortage.

If the figures are correct in the article below just released today by the Mayor's Office there is a vast shortage of trees in San Francisco. Doing the math San Francisco is "short" some 160,000 trees.

This is for discussion purposes at this Saturdays March 10 LPSF monthly meeting at 3:00 pm. at Milano's 9th Ave. and Irving.

City continues aggressive tree-planting campaign
Since 2004, San Francisco has planted more than 16,000 trees, Mayor Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday. The mayor has pledged to plant a total of 2,500 trees by 2010.
San Francisco has fewer trees than other major cities, according to the Department of Public Works. The City has an average of only one tree per every eight residents, compared with the average of one per three residents from a recent study of 22 major cities.

                                 LIBERTY TREE CAMPAIGN

                           FOR A GREENER SAN FRANCISCO

This proclamation by the Libertarian Party of San Francisco calls on all residents, businesses and visitors to actively participate on a voluntary basis in the “greening” of San Francisco.

Whereas, the City and County of San Francisco needs more new trees planted. This is to not only further enhance the beauty of San Francisco but to act as an environmental speed bump in the dissipation of noxious fumes and scrubbing of the atmosphere of carbon dioxide.

Whereas, the San Francisco annual budget makes no allowances for an aggressive tree, shrub and bush planting program.

Whereas, substantial space is available for new tree planting if seedling trees were purchased and voluntary labor were made available.

We, the Libertarian Party of San Francisco, are asking you to assist us in this worthwhile endeavor to “green” San Francisco.

How can I help “green” San Francisco?

The following organizations both public and private are working towards making San Francisco ‘Greener” and can use your help and donations.

How else can I help?

Trees can be donated to commemorate events in your life or for a memoriam for a family member.

Events can be such things as: graduating from junior - middle - high school. This can be done individually or as a graduating class.

For family members who have passed on a memorial tree would be a wonderful way to remember them.

When you get married you can plant a wedding day tree.

With the birth of a child you can plant a birth tree.

Open a new business and plant a tree in recognition.

Honor your child when they become confirmed or have their bar or bas mitzvah and plant a tree in recognition.

Other sources to promote voluntary contributions for “greening” San Francisco with Liberty Trees:

Designing and printing up simple brochures on “greening” San Francisco.

The “greening” of San Francisco brochure promotion made available to be handed out at the front desk to each visitor at all hotels.

The same brochure made available to funeral home directors for handing out to family relatives for donating a memorial tree.

The same brochure mailed out to school principals for their school to donate a tree and a graduating class to do the same.

Other categories would apply as well including the LPSF itself donating a Liberty Tree and calling on all the other SF political parties to do the same.
