Jury nullification talk (Sunday, Sept. 20)

On Sunday I attended a monthly community event in Berkeley, sponsored by the Berkeley Cannabis Buyers Club, Black Panther Party Alumni Legacy Network, and maybe other groups, that featured speakers, free food, and free cannabis, attended by over 100 people, at the Chapel of the Flowers, 3049 Adeline Street in Berkeley, just across the street from Ashby BART:

Hearing one of the speakers talk about the importance of voting, but recognizing that the constituency might not welcome a pitch specifically for the Libertarian Party (I estimate the crowd of 100+ as probably 75% or more African-American and mostly left-leaning) , I decided to offer to give a presentation on jury nullification at their next month’s event, happening Sunday Sept. 20, and this was accepted. I was told I’ll have 10 minutes. If it goes well, I will try to schedule a future appearance to talk about the Non-Aggression Principle, and maybe then about the LP.

For September’s talk, I’d like to have some jury rights fliers to hand out. Although this Friday’s hearing on the “Top Two” law in California that we’d planned to attend has been cancelled by the judge, I’m sure there will be other opportunities to distribute them, and therefore would like the LPSF to order some. The Fully Informed Jury Association offers several for sale, listed here:

The website lists their rack cards ($.15 each in orders of 1000) as being out of stock, but they have several full-color tri-fold brochures listed at $.18 each in orders of 1000 (including shipping), which seems reasonable. Given the timing (our next monthly meeting is not until September 13), I propose the LPSF officers vote to appropriate $180 to order 1,000 copies of this brochure:

For Brendan, Richard, and Trip, please let me know if you vote to approve this, or if you or any others have any other thoughts or suggestions. And for anyone who’d like to attend, put it on your calendar. I will create a Meetup event.

Starchild,

You made a proposal, not a motion. In order to vote on this, it needs to be
worded as a motion. I will do this on your behalf: move to allocate $180
for the purpose of ordering 1,000 jury nullification brochures from FIJA.

Hi Trip,

I’m not seeing that Brendan has voted, and no one else from the Activists list weighed in, but three of our four officers have voted to approve, so please go ahead and order these pamphlets. Paying by check is preferable if that’s an option (preserving non-electronic payments is a freedom issue!), but if FIJA won’t take a check or can’t turn around in time to get them to us a few days before Sept. 20, you have a debit card now from the credit union to use, yes?

You can use the LPSF mailbox address (2261 Market Street #6, SF, CA, 94114) for delivery; please let me know if there are any issues with doing this in the next couple days, and when to expect delivery after ordering. In a pinch I can order them myself and get reimbursed.

Folks, as secretary it would really help me if you would Reply All when
responding or voting via e-mail. If you only respond to one person and it’s
not me, I cannot see it and therefore I cannot count it as part of the vote
tally. Right now, I’m operating on hearsay that Starchild and Trip voted on
the motion on the table, but I have no evidence that they did so. Is this
right? Can you forward me the e-mails that you voted in so that I have a
copy for the official record? Let’s do better, thanks.

Shoot. Maybe try 150, then 100? Below 100, not sure it’s worth it (I expect 100 to 150 people at the event).

Those (the guilty or not guilty) are entirely out of stock. I cannot even put in a quantity to attempt any order.

Shall I go below 200 on the original selected brochure?

Hi Trip,

Just left you a voicemail. Too bad they’re out of the fliers I picked – I hope FIJA is still active! Please try ordering their “Guilty Or Not Guilty” rack card instead – slightly cheaper at $.15 instead of $.18 per 1,000, and on consideration might even be a better choice. Hopefully they’ll have those in stock:

Please let me know how low to go on my attempts.

I have tried incrementally all the way down to 200 with steps of 20 subtracted each time. They do not even have 200 in stock.

Would an order of 100 even be beneficial?

They do not even have 400 in stock.

Unfortunate news. There are not even 500 in stock.

Hi Trip,

No, unfortunately I’ve heard nothing. Please go ahead and try the approach you suggested.

Hi Starchild,

Any response from them? Shall I go ahead and proceed with the test orders?

Ok, just let me know when I have the go ahead to proceed with my test orders.

Nothing so far.

Good morning Starchild. Good plan. Have you heard anything back?

Let’s give them a day or two to respond, and if they don’t, then yeah, what you suggest sounds reasonable.

Aside from wanting to know if they’ll take a check, exactly how many brochures they have (or other options – maybe some of the others are fully stocked) and the expected time to get the order to us, all things I’d rather hear directly from a human being, I also welcome the opportunity to touch base with others in the freedom movement, ask a bit about how their organizations and efforts are going, etc.

Love & Liberty,

Hi Starchild,

I feel that we are running low on time to place the order and ensure you receive the brochures in time to have them for September 20th.

Therefore, I suggest I attempt to order the following quantities:

850 - $170
750 - $150
650 - $130
550 - $110
500 - $100

And find out at which point it no longer fails and actually allows me to complete the order.

What do you think?

I can’t seem to find a current working number for FIJA, which isn’t encouraging. I sent an email. Hopefully we’ll hear back.

Do you have more information at this point?

Yeah, I hate when stuff is badly designed like that and it wastes your time before telling you what it should have told you earlier. I’ll try to call them tomorrow and ask.

Their software sucks. They should not allow me to add 1000 to cart and attempt to buy that order when they do not have that many. The error should have happened earlier in the flow.

I cannot tell you how many brochures of this type that they actually have. We would be in a guess and check scenario unless we actually call them.

Let me try calling them during the day tomorrow and see if they’ll take a check, unless you want to. I don’t think it would be too slow, but I want to confirm that with someone.

Hi Starchild,

I just attempted to place the order. I had all the information in place and had clicked the place order. Then, it errored stating that there are not 1000 of these brochures in stock.

Shall I try some other lesser number? 900 would be precisely the same cost as 1000

You can use the LPSF mailbox address (2261 Market Street #6, SF, CA, 94114 https://www.google.com/maps/search/2261+Market+Street+%236,+SF,+CA,+94114?entry=gmail&source=g) for delivery; please let me know if there are any issues with doing this in the next couple days, and when to expect delivery after ordering. In a pinch I can order them myself and get reimbursed.

I vote yes (in favor of the motion).

Okay. I’ll second your motion.

Love & Liberty,

((( starchild )))

Starchild,

You made a proposal, not a motion. In order to vote on this, it needs to be worded as a motion. I will do this on your behalf: move to allocate $180 for the purpose of ordering 1,000 jury nullification brochures from FIJA.

On Sunday I attended a monthly community event in Berkeley, sponsored by the Berkeley Cannabis Buyers Club, Black Panther Party Alumni Legacy Network, and maybe other groups, that featured speakers, free food, and free cannabis, attended by over 100 people, at the Chapel of the Flowers, 3049 Adeline Street https://www.google.com/maps/search/3049+Adeline+Street?entry=gmail&source=g in Berkeley, just across the street from Ashby BART:

The Fully Informed Jury Association offers several for sale, listed here:

https://fija.org/shop/brochures.html

Love & Liberty,

((( starchild )))
