Activist Reports

Jawj (Jane) shared that she’s been trying to file an Oakland police report against the neighbor who stole her cat. She lamented that police won’t take a report seriously unless there is political pressure. Trial for the cat theft coming up in September.

Nick, a walk-in guest, joined the meeting. The members present introduced themselves. Nick said his interest in libertarianism stems from privacy from the surveillance state. He said that he ran for the Democratic County Central Committee (DCCC) in SF in the late 1960s; he came in last, but managed to convince a few people of championing civilian privacy from gov surveillance.

Starchild talked about the Libertarian National Convention last month and encouraged folks to support Chase Oliver (L) for President. He got assaulted by hotel security for unfurling a banner saying “No Wannabe Be Dictators” during the Trump event. Separately, Starchild invited JB Ortega for District Supervisor to speak at today’s meeting; Mr. Ortega was not present.

Richard shared he also was at the LP national convention and was disappointed that the national chair and secretary were re-elected. Starchild agreed, but suggested the state chair was a bigger obstacle toward party cohesion. Richard said he was one of the Libertarians that booed Trump at the convention. He noted that the mainstream media picked up on Libertarians jeering Trump and are starting to give giving the LP positive coverage, as opposed to a footnote or treating L’s like conspiracy theory nuts, which is their normal practice.

New Business

There was discussion of issuing a recommendation in the SF mayoral race.
Southside Forward (YIMBYs) are orchestrating a District 11 Supervisor candiate candidate debate at 650 Capital Ave., SF tomorrow from 3-5pm.

There was discussion regarding approval of the LPSF minutes from the last five months. Starchild objected, saying he wanted more time to read them and propose amendments. He recommended that other LPSF officers do a close reading. Jawj said she received the e-mail with the minutes, but couldn’t open them. Starchild showed her how to open the attachments on her phone. Starchild said he would be ok with approving the January 2024 minutes and then individually at the next meeting.

Jawj moved, with second, to approve the January 2024 LPSF minutes with Starchild’s amendments. No objection. Passed unanimously.

Upcoming Events of Interest
Monday the 17th the LPCA Excom meets.
June 22nd Braver Angels online group discussion across political lines.

There was discussion of approving a donation using LPSF funds to Chase for President campaign. All present agreed to a donation. Starchild asked the group for suggestions of what amount. Richard suggested $500. Starchild proposed $300 instead, saying we should order some stuff and distribute first, and can order more later if needed objected, saying $300 is standard for a county central committee.

Starchild moved, with second, to approve $300 in LPSF funds to Chase for President campaign. No objection. Passed unanimously.

There was discussion about searching for a new treasurer at next month’s meeting. The LPSF has been without a reliable treasurer for the past six months. Starchild has the cheques to checks for the account, but per LPSF bylaws the chair cannot act like as the treasurer. Starchild is trying to meet with former LPSF treasurer Greg Michael. Richard agreed to remind current treasurer Terry Nycum of the next meeting.

Richard shared that the LP Radical Caucus is having its annual membership meeting later this month. Jawj expressed interest in joining the Caucus. Not seeing any notice on LPRC website - for more information, contact Susan Hogarth, LPRC chair.

The meeting adjourned at 5pm.

The next meeting will be the second Saturday in July from 3-5pm in the 3rd floor Paley conference room and online via Jitsi videoconference.
