Jeff Adachi Ballot Measure Project

Marcy,

To clarify, I personally support Jeff Adachi's measure, and
appreciate your work and that of Mike, Ann, and Sarosh in preparing
material for a potential ballot argument toward that end. My feeling
was simply that we should hear from as many candidates and proponents/
opponents of ballot measures as possible before taking any official
positions, -- something that it looks like we might actually do this
cycle for a change!

The first SF Liberty Coalition* Meetup I'm organizing will be taking
place Thursday, July 21, from 7-9pm at the 50 Mason Social House
located at 50 Mason Street (@Market), and I agreed to dedicate this
inaugural event to hearing from candidates and proponents/opponents of
ballot measures. This will give us an opportunity to become better
informed about arguments for and against the issues before voting.
Even in cases where we're already pretty certain which position we'll
take (e.g. supporting the strongest pension reform measure on the
ballot), hearing from measure proponents and opponents and having the
opportunity to question them will make us better prepared to draft
stronger arguments in support of our own positions. Not only that, but
interacting with these folks increases our political visibility and
relevance in city politics and exposes them to libertarian views.
Aubrey offered to help me with contacting the candidates and ballot
measure proponents/opponents to invite them to attend.

After hearing from candidates and proponents/opponents of measures on
July 21, we can discuss the issues and vote on what positions the LPSF
will take at our August meeting (Aug. 13). This will still leave us
several days after we've adopted our official LPSF positions, to
finish drafting any ballot arguments we wish to submit, as the
deadline to submit free ballot arguments is not until August 18 and
the deadline for paid arguments not until August 22. (My best guess is
that the free proponent/opponent arguments for the pension reform
measure(s) will be preempted by the mayor or Board of Supervisors, and
that any arguments we submit on this topic will therefore need to be
paid arguments.)

Love & Liberty,

*The monthly speaking event I've been trying to organize, which was
endorsed by the LPSF last year but for which I only recently found a
venue. The Meetup website is http://www.meetup.com/SF-Liberty-
Coalition/, which I will be updating soon.

Thanks everyone...good luck with the process.

Mike
