According to John Zhao, who I spoke with last night, there is an important meeting of the School Board tonight. Member Eric Mar is supposed to be introducing an attempt to get rid of the diversity index.
John is with Parents Fighting for Neighborhood Schools, the group of mostly Chinese-American parents who've been up in arms about the school district wanting to bus their kids to schools across town because their ethnic group is "over-represented" at schools near where they live. He says these parents should be out in force at the meeting.
I've been trying to get a speaker on this issue for Direct Action Forum this month, and finally managed to track down and talk with John after finding his number in the directory and . Unfortunately he didn't want to speak himself -- says he isn't political enough -- and apparently didn't feel comfortable giving out names and phone numbers for any of the other parents, but thought I would have no trouble finding someone at the meeting when they'd get a chance to see me in person. So that's what I'm going to do.
If you plan to come, John also recommended calling the school board to register as a speaker. It's not required, but he says that way they can't tell you that you can't speak during public comment, as has sometimes happened. Their phone number is 241-6493, extension 0.
So I'll be going to the Massachusetts gay marriage celebration at Castro & Market at 5pm, then the social at the LGBT Center afterward, then stop by the MECA meeting that Chris mentioned at 7pm before heading to the school board meeting. It's shaping up to be a busy evening!
