Hearing on Rec & Park Department Fee Increases (Thurs. April 19, 2pm, City Hall) / Government Golf Favoritism?

Starchild, Who was the name of the developer who could house the homeless for 6k per unit. Maybe he should get one of the golf courses or two. One to build the units for the homeless and another to build privately and pay for the homeless housing.

Jim Reed is his name...

Mike

The same thought actually crossed my mind, about housing for the homeless being a possible use for the land. The guy's name is Jim Reid, and he is (or at least was, I haven't seen or heard about him recently) a building contractor, not a developer, who ran for mayor in 2003 (same year as Mike, or else I might have voted for him). He built one 12' by 12' house designed to house a single person for $6000, plumbing and electricity included, to show it could be done.

When the homeless or "affordable housing" issues come up, I often bring up Jim Reid and his idea, and point out that the city government could build one for every homeless person in SF for less than a single year's cost of funding all the various programs and services supposedly meant to help the homeless. Hell, I bet they could get businesses to donate some, perhaps even most or all, of the necessary materials. But then all the bureaucrats and political patronage recipients would be out the jobs and the money associated with "serving" the homeless year after year.

Love & liberty,
