Just listened to your talk about self esteem on the Economic Policy Journal. Very important, as you say, to separate your actions (what you do) from your self (who you are). Interestingly, that is a libertarian approach, I think, in the sense that it is one's personal responsibility to do the separation and to work on improving the actions if one is unhappy with what is happening.
