One of the things we talked about at our meeting Saturday was the possibility of doing some volunteering as a group. The LPSF did this some years ago with an organization called Raphael House that has community programs for the poor and such, and I reached out to them.
As it turns out, they don’t have in-person group volunteer opportunities right now and may not for the next 6 months or so (their rep explained that they’re a “congregant living facility” with a Covid-vulnerable population), but you can read below the email she sent after I spoke with her by phone, in which she describes some other types of help they can currently use. She also mentioned some other organizations that we might consider contacting – Hampton, Compass Family Services, and St. Anthony’s.
Chris made contact with someone who’s a volunteer with another volunteer group that does outdoor cleanup, though apparently they work under the auspices of the Department of Public Works (city government agency), which I would personally rather avoid if we can find an independent alternative.
I made a suggestion that we could also go out on our own without working with another group, for instance by carrying signs and trash bags around in Dolores Park, approaching people and collecting any trash they may want to discard as well as picking up stray items. On a busy, sunny weekend the park is always crowded, and trash frequently gets left, so it could be productive as well as good visibility. This could readily be combined with handing out literature and talking with people.
Anyone have any opinions or thoughts on any of these options or groups?
Love & Liberty,
((( starchild )))

Hi Starchild,
Thank you again for reaching out about current volunteer opportunities at Raphael House. I have made a note to follow up with you once our onsite volunteer opportunities resume.
In the meantime, below are the ways our community has been supporting us remotely. If any of these opportunities do sound like a good fit, please let me know and I'm happy to provide more information.
Purchase items for and assemble "welcome kits", "lunch kits", " kids activity kits" or holiday related "goody bags" for the kids and families in our Residential Shelter
Share a custom Amazon wish list with our current item needs
Host a peer-to-peer online fundraiser for Raphael House
Pre-recorded videos: Short videos submitted by volunteers on topics that are relevant to the parents or children in our Residential Shelter have been much appreciated throughout the pandemic. Topics can include but are not limited to interview tips, resume building skills, understanding credit scores, how to use Gmail on your phone, step by step art project tutorials, or a kid friendly mindfulness, stretching, or yoga how-to. Video presentations should be under 10 minutes in length and our staff can coordinate with you to identify a video topic you would be interested in sharing. I've also attached a PDF to this email with potential topic ideas.
Thank you!
Kellen
